Bill Rubin, a Democrat running in the 10th Councilmanic District, officially announced his candidacy on Friday night in front of more than 400 people at the Sprinkler Fitters Local 692 union hall.
Rubin hopes to challenge Republican Councilman Brian O’Neill, who was first elected in 1979.
Former City Controller Jonathan Saidel was master of ceremonies.
“I’m gonna have a city councilman I’m proud of,” he said.Among those in attendance were ward leaders Bill Dolbow, Christine Solomon, John Sabatina, Pat Parkinson and Bernice Hill and union bosses Joe Dougherty of Ironworkers Local 401, Cathy Scott of AFSCME District Council 47 and Pete Matthews of District Council 33.
Elected officials on hand included state treasurer Rob McCord, Councilman Bill Greenlee, state Reps. John Sabatina Jr. and Kevin Boyle and City Controller Alan Butkovitz. Saidel and Rubin both suggested that McCord should challenge Gov. Tom Corbett in 2014.Even former Phillies pitcher Larry Christenson, a friend of Rubin’s, was there.
Rubin, who resigned as the city’s supervisor of elections to join the campaign, wants to raise $200,000. He’s a member of the district attorney’s office youth aid panel and is the former vice chairman of the Philadelphia Board of Pensions and Retirement.
If elected, he believes he’ll be able to identify cost savings and spending priorities. He expects the 17-person Council to have seven or eight new members next year.“I want to be part of that group that changes the direction of the city,” he said
